#BBCURLS: Theatre & Film Hair & Make Up for performers with tight natural curls and POC. 

In conjunction with makeup artists and hairstylists who specialize in working with people of colour and Cultural Competency educators from other industries this workshop is designed to address the issues that effect performers and creatives with tight curly natural hair and people of colour. 

The course aims to focus on cultural awareness of language in relation to skin, hair, religion and gender, and provide best practice guidelines to improve the workplace for artists. The workshops would help to bridge the gap in knowledge for the actors and performers, design team, and management/production.

Course Outline

Module 1: Introduction • What is cultural competency? • Why is cultural competency important in the theater, television, and film industries? • How to use inclusive language when talking about skin, hair, religion, and gender.

Module 2: Skin Care • The different types of skin and their needs • How to care for your skin before, during, and after a production • Common skin problems and how to treat them.

Module 3: Scalp and Hair Care • The different types of hair and their needs • How to care for your scalp and hair before, during, and after a production • Common scalp and hair problems and how to treat them.

Module 4: Makeup • How to choose the right makeup for your skin tone and hair type • How to apply makeup for different types of roles • Common makeup mistakes to avoid.

Module 5: Hairstyling • How to style different types of hair • How to create different hairstyles for different types of roles • Common hairstyling mistakes to avoid.

Module 6: Putting It All Together • How to create a complete look for a role, including skin care, makeup, and hairstyling • Tips for working with the design team and management/production to create inclusive looks.
